The 4th annual Letterkenny Trad Week starts this Saturday January 20th and runs until Saturday 27th. The festival brings some of the world’s finest traditional musicians from Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia and the United States to Donegal to perform in four brilliant concerts, two at An Grianán Theatre and two in the specially created festival venue at Kinnegar Brewery, Ballyraine, Letterkenny.

The Week kicks off with four leading Irish musicians from Arcady, Altan, Dervish and Solas – vocalist Niamh Parsons, fiddler Ciarán Tourish, flautist Liam Kelly and guitar virtuoso John Doyle, who come together for a Music Network Irish tour, at Kinnegar Brewery on Saturday 20th.

According to Siobhan Long in the Irish Times, “Now that they’ve had a brace of dates under their belt, this tour is heating up. Singer Niamh Parsons can anchor any session, such is her on stage gravitas and ability to take complete possession of a song. Her fellow travellers on this tour have whetted their appetites in the company of Lúnasa, Dervish and Solas, but this is an ensemble with a difference: with enough space between the musicians to let the music and songs shine through.”

The second concert at Kinnegar Brewery  features Lau the pioneering contemporary folk trio comprising three of the UK’s finest traditional musicians – Kris Dreever (vocals, guitar), Martin Green (accordion, electronics) and Aiden O Rourke (fiddle), on Monday 22nd.

They are four time winners of ‘Best Group’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and have also appeared on ‘Later… With Jools Holland’ (BBC 2 TV).  According to The Guardian “Lau are a remarkable band — the most musically adventurous trio in British folk: exquisite and hypnotic, musicianship at its best”.

The two concerts at An Grianán Theatre feature the only Irish performance by the internationally renowned String Sisters on Sunday 21st and the brilliant Irish accordion player Sharon Shannon and her band on Saturday 27th.

All concerts start at 8pm and tickets can be booked at An Grianán Theatre on 0749120777 or angrianan.com
