Exhibition Launch on Saturday 26 April, 2.00pm
Between Breaths explores a particular way of seeing and experiencing the world. The exhibition brings together a sequence of ephemeral moments that exist somewhere between the seen and unseen, the real and imagined – felt but barely visible.
Time spent immersed within the Donegal landscape has allowed for a meditative quality to emerge within my working process. In the time I was making this work I was thinking about that momentary pause at the top of each breath, as a space where our internal and external landscapes intersect and commune.
With a growing concern for the fragility of this world and and our fractured relationship with it, the paintings offer a pause and a change of perspective – Perhaps one that encourages a lasting, reciprocal relationship between humans and nature. The resulting body of ten portrait canvases could be seen as windows into alternative realities – A slippage between worlds, transcending into spiritual or painted parallels.
The paintings remain descriptive of this in-between state- transformative moments achieved through careful studies of light, thin veils of colour and shifting forms. They hold a rootedness and weight but also an inherent reach and search for something indescribable and beyond language – Almost unobtainable yet possible. Perhaps a space that we can only access or resonate within our soul. Nature is held as a mirror – reflective and volatile, elements that are forever present not only in nature but in each one of us.
Charlie Scott (b.1995) is an Irish artist based in Errarooey More, Falcarragh. Graduating from the Belfast School of Art in 2017, Scott’s work has been widely exhibited across Ulster and purchased for various public collections including the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Recent exhibitions include Other Worlds at the Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny and The Space Between, QSS Belfast and the Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition. Scott’s paintings explore our relationship with nature; reflecting the interior and exterior landscapes of the painter. Scott’s work explores definitions of oil painting and what it means to respond to nature in the contemporary context.
Between Breaths marks the artist’s second solo exhibition to date.
