Crash Ensemble in partnership with the Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny present a 4 day workshop series facilitated by Ed Devane with mentorship from the Crash Ensemble musicians.

Age range: Suitable for young people aged between 13 and 18 who are learning a musical instrument.
Venue: Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny
Dates: 28-31 October 2025
Fee: €20 participation fee

>> WHAT’S COVERED EACH DAY?

Tuesday 28th October – Introduction to Sound & Materials
10am-12noon

Foundations of sound design and instrument-making
Activities include:
Listening and sonic awareness exercises

  • – Exploration of everyday materials as sound-makers (striking, rubbing, bowing)
    Basic principles of instrument design and amplification
    Introduction to recording with smartphones
    – Mentoring from Crash musicians

Wednesday 29th October – Sampling, Mixing, and Electronic Instruments
10am-4pm (including a 1-hour lunch break)

Sound transformation and performance interfaces
Activities include:
– Sharing and analysing recorded material from Session 1
– Creating and manipulating samples using accessible tools (e.g. phone apps or instructor-provided Arduino-based samplers)
– Introduction to op-amps, mic preamps, and basic amplification principles
– Graphic notation and conducted improvisation
– Blending electronic and acoustic instruments
– Mentoring from Crash musicians

Thursday 30th October – Composition & Rehearsal
10am-4pm (including a 1-hour lunch break)

Composition, structure, and collaborative refinement
Activities include:
Composition workshop using participants’ instrument, recordings, and electronics
– Rehearsing solo or small-group works
– Applying extended techniques, graphic scores, and improvisation
– Mentoring from Crash musicians

Friday 31st October – (Optional) Informal Performance/Sharing
12 noon (duration approximately 1.5 hours)
– Informal sharing of works – friends and family can attend.

Limited to 15 participants. Booking essential.

Closed Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.

There is a €2 booking fee per ticket. These booking fees are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for credit.

We offer concessionary rate to students, over 65s, under 18s, unemployed and registered disabled. Current ID is essential to avail of these concessions. Concessions may not be available for some shows.

E Tickets

We are now using electronic tickets. When you book you will be emailed a link to an electronic ticket. This can be presented on your phone for scanning on arrival at the venue. Alternately you can choose to download and print your ticket at home. Just be sure to have the QR code clearly visible for scanning

 

 

Terms & Conditions

  1. Latecomers may only be admitted until a suitable break in the performance at the discretion of management.
  2. Management reserves the right to refuse admission.
  3. Use of flash photography and recording equipment is not permitted. 
  4. Management reserves the right to make essential changes to the cast or programme without prior notice.
  5. Management reserves the right to cancel any performance without prior notice. In this event tickets may be exchanged or refunded to the face value only from the original point of sale.
  6. Ticket holders enter the venue at their own risk and assume all responsibility for their property.
  7. Food may not be consumed in the auditorium.
  8. For safety reasons, buggies or carrycots are not permitted in the auditorium.

Parking

We strongly advise allowing ample time to find a parking space and to be mindful that traffic can be extremely heavy in Letterkenny particularly on Thursday and Friday evenings and weekends.

Our car park is located to the rear of An Grianán Theatre and has room for approximately 70 cars. It is free of charge.

After 6pm there is no parking fee for using the main street.
