Unfortunately, due to injury, Steve Cooney can no longer perform at the gig on Saturday 24 January. We’re very sorry for the disappointment and look forward to welcoming him back to the RCC in the near future.
The good news is that the night will still go ahead, and we’re delighted to welcome Donogh Hennessy. Donogh is a founding member of Irish super-group Lúnasa, an award-winning guitarist and composer who has toured worldwide and performed and recorded with artists including Sharon Shannon, Seamus Begley and Pauline Scanlon.
Join us for a unique evening of Irish language storytelling and music celebrating the rich cultural traditions of Donegal. This special event brings together three remarkable artists whose work is deeply rooted in myth, memory and musical heritage.
Eithne Ní Ghallchobhair, an award-winning storyteller, writer, folklore expert and musician from Ardara, will share captivating tales from the Fionn and the Fianna cycle (An Fhiannaíocht) and the Ulster Cycle of Cú Chulainn and the Red Branch Knights. Her newest publication, Caithréim agus Tóir (Arlen House, 2024), offers a lyrical retelling of the elopement of Oisín Mac Fhionn and Niamh Cinn Óir.
Completing the trio is Inishowen accordion virtuoso Dermot Byrne, a former All-Ireland champion whose effortless, deeply musical style has made him one of the great players of his generation. A longtime member of Altan, Dermot has collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists including Dolly Parton, John Prine, Stéphane Grappelli, Alison Krauss, Salsa Celtica and Paul Brady. Steeped in the Donegal fiddle tradition from childhood, he is celebrated for both his mastery of local repertoire and his versatility across musette, French-Canadian and South American styles. He was named TG4 Ceoltóir na Bliana (Musician of the Year) in 2013.
