STOCHELO ROSENBERG

Born into a family of musicians, Stochelo started playing guitar at age 10. He learned to play from his father Mimer and uncle Wasso Grünholz, but mostly by listening to records by Django Reinhardt. At 12, together with cousin Nous’che Rosenberg on percussion guitar and friend Rino van Hooydonk on double bass, he won first prize in a TV contest for children. In the following youth years, Stochelo played mainly with Nous’che and his brother Nonnie on double bass in churches and gypsy camps all over Europe.

In the late 1980s, at the age of 20, his big international breakthrough came with the Rosenberg Trio (Stochelo and cousin Nous’che and his brother Nonnie). The trio has played on many important stages worldwide; from Carnegie Hall to the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, at many important jazz festivals such as North Sea Jazz, Jazz in Marciac, Festival Django Reinhardt in Samois, Jazz en Touraine, and many top jazz clubs such as Bimhuis Amsterdam and Le Duc des Lombards Paris. The Rosenberg Trio represented “the essence of Gypsy jazz”.

Stochelo has developed into a world-class guitarist. Within the genre of Gypsy-jazz, Stochelo is undoubtedly considered the absolute best. He has written several wonderful pieces of music and is also constantly looking for new challenges. Besides Gypsy jazz, Stochelo has developed very broad musically, performing with musicians from other genres. He likes to be influenced by styles such as bossa nova, pop and classical.

He has played with many top musicians such as Stephane Grapelli, Bireli Lagrene, Tommy Emmanuel, Peter Beets, Jaap van Zweden, Toots Thielemans and more.

PAULUS SCHÄFER

Paulus Schäfer (1978) is one of the most talented Gypsy Jazz guitarists in the Netherlands. Born in the Dutch Sinti community, he learned to play the guitar at an early age. His teacher was Waso Grünholz, a legend within the Sinti community, who encouraged him to develop his own sound.

Paulus is a sought-after guitarist worldwide and has played on many important stages and jazz festivals; from Carnegie Hall and Royal Opera House Mumbai to the Bimhuis and Jazz Dock Prague, and many jazz festivals such as Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Amersfoort World Jazz Festival, Jazz in Duketown, Daejon International Guitar Festival, Breda Jazz, Django Reinhardt Festival Samois and more.

Typical of Paulus is his very broad musical interests, and he plays in a number of diverse formations. Since meeting the virtuoso accordionist Doinique Paats in 2014, he has regularly performed with him as a duo. In 2023, they toured a large number of Dutch theatres together. Under the name Sous le Ciel de Paris they play the most beautiful French songs. Paulus also has very beautiful compositions of his own to his name, and on his successful album Letter to Van Gogh he plays them together with Tcha Limberger and top pianist Peter Beets. A major tour of more than 20 Dutch theatres with The Five Great Guitars has been booked for 2024.

Together with guitarist Joost Zoeteman, Paulus clearly shows that he also enjoys playing other styles within jazz music, and he has played with many great musicians such as Stochelo Rosenberg, Bireli Lagrene, Jan Akkerman, Antoine Boyer, Martin Taylor, Jan Kuiper and Fapy Lafertin.

Paulus Schäfer; a phenomenal guitarist with an unprecedented ability to improvise, and always seeking innovation together with other top musicians, both at home and abroad!
