Set in Brazil, 1977, Marcelo (Wagner Moura) returns to Recife while on the run and finds precarious shelter within a secretive community of refugees led by the formidable Dona Sebastiana. He takes a position at the Identification Records Office as both cover and a way to uncover traces of his mother’s past, but is soon drawn into a murky world of espionage, conspiracy and murder. At the centre of it all stands the corrupt local police chief, whose unsettling knowledge of Marcelo’s history threatens to expose far more than it reveals.
