Letterkenny Trad Week 2020

Acclaimed Irish folk artist Lisa O’Neill comes to Letterkenny Trad Week for an evening of raw, true folk songs.

‘Heard A Long Gone Song’, her first album for Rough Trade Records imprint River Lea, is a collection of traditional material interspersed with her own.

The sense of ownership Lisa imbues in these old songs, coupled with the immutability of her chosen subjects makes it hard to tell which is which.

Tackling songs passed through generations, some mixed with political messages giving a voice to a community, or dark tales of the past, Lisa performs all with ease.

Lemoncello are Laura Quirke and Claire Kinsella; two Irish musicians from Carlow and Letterkenny respectively, who became friends while studying at Maynooth University. They make music together using four fundamental ingredients — a guitar, a cello and two voices.

While bonding as students over discussion of musical intricacies; the power of particular chord progressions, the challenge of emotional vulnerability and humour in lyric-writing, Laura shared her songs with Claire, and soon they were playing at ‘The Loft’, a nurturing open mic in Maynooth, Claire’s cello forming a natural partnership with Laura’s guitar.
