Radical ReThink | Conversations in Contemporary Art Practice


The conversations aim to create dialog and to provoke critical thinking around art and culture and the contested ‘value’ of culture in society. The title of the programme aims to give the artists presenting, a guide to frame the presentation of their work and talk about their art practice and how that connects with the world they live in. It provides an opportunity to talk about their unique approach to their practice, how it has changed and developed. How does the work interrogate the world you live in and what has been the driving force in making work?

The format for the evening of the talk will be two different artists giving a 20 minute presentation; one artist will be from outside the county and the other will be a local artist. Afterwards there will be a discussion with both artists and a Q&A with the audience chaired by Bernadette Hopkins. We will be asking artists from different disciplines to present showing diversity in art forms and practice.


Mary Cremin is a curator, writer and art historian. She holds a degree in Art History and Geography from University College Cork and graduated with a Masters in Visual Art Practices from the Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dublin.

She is currently the Director, Void Gallery, Derry and is the Commissioner and Curator of the Irish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, 2019 with artist Eva Rothschild. Prior to this she was the Programme Curator of Temple Bar Gallery + Studios and the Artistic Director of The Treeline Project with Oonagh Young.

In 2015, she was Curator of TULCA Festival of Visual Art, Seachange, which included over 30 national and international artists. She has delivered large scale exhibitions and commissions such as Magnetism, Hazelwood Estate, Sligo, (2015), Richard Mosse, The Enclave, Irish Pavilion, Venice Biennale, (2013).

Prior to this she was Project Curator at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. She worked on exhibitions such as Eileen Gray, Lynda Benglis, Francis Alÿs, Carlos Garaicoa, Romuald Hazoumè, Cyprien Gaillard, Gerard Byrne, Alice Maher and Garrett Phelan and has acted as editor/ assistant editor on IMMA publications and the multi-disciplinary publication Boulevard Magenta. Curated projects at IMMA include Into the Silence of the Night, IMMA, (2015), Sidney Nolan; Ned Kelly Series(2012-2013), Garrett Phelan, off site NEW FAITH LOVELSONG (2012), Conversations: Photography from the Bank of America Collection (2012). She has produced IMMA Summer Rising events (2016/2015/2014).


Myrid Carten lives and makes films in Dublin. Originally from Donegal, she graduated in 2014 with a BA in Fine Art and History of Art from Goldsmiths University of London.

Her works are narratives where story and reality play meet. She uses personal autobiography and surreal cinematic enactments of intimate desires as a means to mediate Subjectivity.

Authorship and authenticity, obsession and rupture are recurring concerns. Her work explores how contemporary mythologies of the self, popular culture and collective memory connect or distance us.

Myrid’s films have screened at Delhi International Film Festival 2017, Newlyn Palace of Culture in partnership with the Tate St Ives, QFT Belfast, FACT Liverpool, Void Derry, Catalyst Belfast, Sheffield Doc Fest, Cine-East and BFI Future Film’s showcase. Her moving image work has been commissioned for the BBC and development with NI Screen.

She founded the Goldsmiths filmmaking collective that brought artists together to produce experimental film work. She now co-runs LUX Critical Forum Dublin and is part of the AMINI LUXCF research group. She co-directs Art Book Club Dublin as part of TBG+S Studio 6 Open.

In 2016 she was awarded the SIAP General Arts Award from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Myrid has recently been awarded the Arts Council and British Council International Artists residency to India 2017-18.
