Letterkenny Active Retirement Association launch their book of memories, ‘Life In a Lantern’ consisting of poems, stories and photos. The memoir project was envisaged as a way for the members of LARA to reflect back on their lives and to have that reflection curated by an experienced facilitator. The results of this process have been fourfold. Old age has been characterised as a period of ‘integrity’ vs ‘despair’. When a person reflects back on their life in such a way that celebrates and cherishes that life lived, then despair does not overpower. Those who have their accomplishments celebrated will feel a sense of integrity. This is a vital determinant of good mental health. This process has also allowed the group to realise their creative potential and to express this in the form of the book (poems, stories and short memoir pieces) and small installation that is being launched as part of Bealtaine. This project also strengthened the bonds of friendship within the group and made the group’s identity cohere in a celebratory way.
