R2D2 – Paul Rooney and Deirdre Schoales
Recent work documenting ‘lockdown’ walks and exploring by two Letterkenny-based artists.

“…that’s Reel 2, Dialog 2, and I said, ’I like that, that’s a great name. ’I wrote it down in my little book, ’Great name.’”
George Lucas

Deirdre Schoales (University of Ulster, BA Fine Arts) is a local artist who has exhibited her work for the past 20 years in Derry, Belfast and Dublin. Photography is the initial tool used to explore and find interesting ways of painting the vast Donegal landscape. Taking inspiration from the constantly changing skies and rugged landscape the work incorporates mixed media to create texture and depth.

For nearly 30 years Letterkenny artist Paul Rooney has steadily exhibited and participated in a variety of arts activities both at home and further afield as his extensive CV testifies. Work such as street theatre, teaching, community work, design and more weave their way throughout his artistic career but his first and primary passion is photography. His ‘need’ to make work is embedded in the artist’s DNA and his back catalogue of exhibitions demonstrates his steadfast commitment to his practice.
