Premiere of new works by Derek Ball featuring Ann Jennings, Ruth McGinley & Niamh McGowan
In 1898 Derek Ball’s grandfather collected a local Kilmacrennan traditional story while helping to build the Letterkenny to Burtonport railway, this story was passed on through generations and Derek has now wrote a song cycle encompassing the building of the railway, the collapse of a portion of the line into a turlough leading to the discovery of the legend of the Giant, and the Giant’s grim story itself.
To mark Derek’s 70th year, local opera diva Ann Jennings gives a dramatic performance of the cycle “The Lough Swilly Railway, a fiddler and the Giant of Doon Rock” accompanied by Derry pianist Ruth McGinley, and a surprise fiddler may make an appearance.
